    Search engine optimisation – SEO

For a given search request, Google wants to display your business in an appropriate relation to competing businesses. Good SEO helps ensure this will happen.

As website owners, we all receive spam telling us how terrible our websites are and promising to fix our businesses and our lives with their SEO services. As a rule, anyone who spams your contact form is not someone you want to do business with, but that doesn’t mean the general idea is invalid.

This post summarises the important points and adds things that are out of scope for Google.

What matters in search engine optimisation - SEO:

    • Page Rank indicates the relative value of pages within your website. You can influence this with sitemap priority.
    • Links from other relevant websites to yours increases the value of your pages
    • Page Rank has nothing to do with traffic
    • All traffic is not equal. One genuine buyer is better than 10 passers-by.
    • Visible, on-the-page content is of the highest importance
    • Use of heading tags H1, H2, H3 indicates the relative importance of page content
    • The site Description Meta tag will be published visibly in the Google search results - Make it read well
    • Keyword Meta data is not important
    • Do not make use of link directories/farms, or any free SEO services
    • Do not engage paid SEO services offered through contact form spam
    • Businesses with offices should be registered and verified with Google Business
    • Request Google Reviews from your customers
    • Above all, nothing beats the value of relevant content displayed on your website.

What else can you do to improve your business?

    Marketing marketing marketing!

Marketing is at the centre of all successful businesses and one should not confuse SEO with marketing. Although we build websites for a living here at WonderWebs, we cannot stress enough that a website on its own is hopeless as a marketing channel.

SEO is all about tweaking or even tricking Google into placing your website above a competitor website for a given search request. Marketing is about all of those visitors that arrive at your website directly, and not necessarily via a Google search.

Marketing is hard work and can be expensive, but it cannot be ignored and cannot be replaced with SEO. Marketing may include any or all of these channels:

    Online

    • Mailing lists
    • Social media
    • Blogging, vlogging, spreading expertise
    • Adwords, Facebook Ads
    Offline
    • Radio, Television
    • Print
    • Sponsorship
    • Expos and fairs
    • Conferences, seminars
    • Cold calling, door to door sales
    • Networking, getting out and meeting people

WonderWebs can't help you get out to meet new clients or partners, but we can certainly help you with your mailing list, social media and of course general marketing advice and support.
